How is a BTEC structured and assessed?
BTECs focus on skills-based learning and are designed around themed units. They are designed with employers so you can be assured that the knowledge, understanding and skills learners develop will prepare them for the world of work. They are made up of assessments – called assignments – which are mostly set by the teacher, are based on real-life scenarios and are in various formats including practical tasks, written work, video recordings or group presentations. BTECs enable learners to build knowledge and skills over time and combine the knowledge, skills and behaviours that employers and universities are looking for. They test learners throughout the course with assignments marked by teachers and checked by Pearson using grades – Pass, Merit or Distinction. BTEC Higher Nationals (HN) use holistic assessment, where the learner’s work is evaluated as a whole, rather than as a set of individual tasks. For each unit in a HN qualification, we specify learning outcomes which define the skills and knowledge that learners should be able to evidence on completion of the programme.

It includes features that are personalised to Pearson BTEC to help reduce administration time around assessment delivery and facilitate Quality Assurance, to allow coherent communication between team members and learners.

We have recently introduced digital badging, after completion of our online professional development courses, which can be used towards CPD (Continuing Professional Development).
