There has been a rapid rise in artificial intelligence (AI), becoming one of the most disruptive technologies of our time in sectors as varied as health care and finance. Interior designing is no exception in this case. Currently, AI-based software can create room designs, furniture arrangements, color schemes, and realistic visualizations within minutes. However, there is one recurring problem that comes with such advanced technology. Can AI replace interior designers?
This issue can be seen from two perspectives at once. Although artificial intelligence is now a very powerful design tool, there is no way AI will take away creativity, empathy, and critical thinking – the main skills that set great interior designers apart. This means that AI does not displace experts, but redefines their job responsibilities by delegating boring tasks and letting designers do what they do best.
Among the strengths of AI, the speed and efficiency stand out. Processes that took several hours of illustration, modelling, and rendering can now be achieved in mere fractions of that time. Designers can use AI to generate multiple design ideas, try different styles, and even make realistic visuals without having to dig deep into details. Not only will this help designers work faster, but it will also enable them to make sure their client understands the proposed idea from the very beginning of the project.
Nevertheless, the interior design goes beyond making beautiful designs and arranging the furniture perfectly. Every space has a story to tell and the story is closely connected with the people who inhabit it. The home of a family is a place filled with stories, traditions, and daily activities. The office affects cooperation and productivity while the healthcare facility requires providing comfort and facilitating recovery. The restaurant creates an atmosphere that affects the client's experience. All these spaces require understanding of human feelings, behaviors, and aspirations which cannot be achieved by an algorithm.
An interior designer with experience will spend some time in hearing out the client, understanding their way of living, preferences, culture, and future needs. The clients do not generally express what they want very clearly; that is why they depend on the skills of the interior designer to understand them and give shape to their ideas. It involves the qualities of empathy, communication, and intuition, which are unique to humans. The AI can suggest some amazing designs from the current data, but it cannot build trust, understand emotions, or the human significance of the space.
Designing in terms of creativity is another domain where humans surpass artificial intelligence. An AI designs based on the information obtained from millions of examples, analyzing patterns, and amalgamating knowledge from previous experiences. In contrast, human designers dream of possibilities that lie outside the realm of the current world. They break conventions, try out new concepts, and get creative insights through their experience, culture, arts, and history. Interior designs that usually make a lasting impression tend to be those that challenge conventions instead of following them.
Interior designers are also significant contributors in implementing the projects. Construction projects seldom go according to plan. There are always unforeseen issues that arise in terms of structure, availability of materials, budget issues, etc. that require immediate action to be taken. The collaboration with contractors, suppliers, consultants, and clients requires knowledge and professional skills that greatly exceed the current abilities of AI technology.
Instead of considering AI as a competitor, many professionals are looking at it as a partner. AI is becoming a smart partner which helps designers in completing the mundane task such as creating mood boards, developing concepts, making visualizations, and conducting sustainability analyses. AI saves the time of designers for doing such mundane tasks; therefore, the designers can use their time in innovating, brainstorming with clients, and taking strategic decisions.
Future interior designers will be the experts who will expertly combine creativity and technology. Interior designers who will have knowledge about the use of AI technology and at the same time have developed skills like communication skills, emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and sustainable design skills will be able to meet the ever-changing demands of the industry. The future is going to require interior designers to have the capability of integrating AI into their designs.
Finally, artificial intelligence technology has revolutionized interior design practice, but it has not yet taken over the entire industry. Although computers are able to create a layout, conduct analysis, and create fantastic images, they do not understand the meaning behind a house, the culture of a community, or the goals of an individual client. Good interior design is not only about aesthetics; it is about creating environments where people will feel inspired, relaxed, productive, and at home.
Consequently, the future of interior design will not be a question of choosing between humans and machines. Instead, it will be about combining creativity, technical knowledge, and emerging technologies such as AI to create better design solutions.
For students who want to build a career in this evolving industry, developing both creative and practical design skills is becoming increasingly important. At Explore Education Dubai, the Pearson BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) in Interior Design provides learners with opportunities to develop their design thinking, conceptual development, professional practice, and project-based skills while preparing them for the changing demands of the interior design industry.
As AI continues to progress, successful interior designers will be those who understand how to use technology as a supporting tool while maintaining the creativity, empathy, communication, and human understanding that make great design possible. Ultimately, AI will remain a powerful instrument that helps designers bring human ideas and visions to life.
